• While you have the flipcharts on display this is a good time to point out that while the denominator gets bigger the actual size of the portion gets smaller. This is because we are dividing the whole into more parts.

Give each student a copy of Handout 26 ‘Facts about fractions’ and ask them to read through it and ask about anything they do not understand.

Activity 2 Focus exercise

Give each student a copy of Activity Sheet 59 ‘What do I know about fractions?’ and ask them to work through the activities. While they are doing so this is a good time to go round and see how well they have understood fractions.
